CLP 2

Welcome back to CLP!

Congratulations! You’ve successfully finished the first week of classes! I know your college life has been very different from what you had imagined, but I hope you’ve had a good start to the semester and have been enjoying your classes.

In the last class, I asked you to write about any worries or concerns you might have about this class or university life in general. Not surprisingly, some students are worried about 海外留学研修 (Overseas Study Program). Other students also wrote that they were not sure if they can make friends at college, with all classes being conducted online.

I appreciate your being honest with your concerns. This is a difficult time, especially for at the start of a new school year.

In regards to the Overseas Study Program, of course we don’t know what the situation will be like next year. But the staff here at Rikkyo are doing everything they can do to make the program work.

Also, it is difficult to make friends without having a physical class, but you are not alone. When I feel stressed, I remember this will not last forever and I look forward to future plans. What plans are you looking forward to once the restrictions have been lifted?

I also noticed that many of you are worried about your English grammar, spelling, and overall writing reports. I just want to reassure you that your grades will not reflect these things.

Get to know your classmates!

In the last class, I asked you to write your self-introduction in English. I really enjoyed reading about you. It sounds like all of you are really interesting, motivated, hard-working students, and I hope to meet all of you in person soon. In today’s class, I’d like to invite you to read self-introductions written by your classmates, and get to know your peers and meet them, albeit online.

While you read, I’d like you to try to complete the following table:

Questions Answer
1. Find someone who has been to New Zealand. What is his/her name?
2. Find someone who is from overseas. What is his/her name? Where is s/he from?
3. Find someone who is from the same prefecture (or country) as you. What is his/her name? Where is s/he from?
4. Find someone who is studying the same third language as you. What is his/her name? What is your third language?
5. Find someone who has the same hobby as you. What is his/her name? What hobby do you share?
6. Find someone who belonged to the same club as you in high school. What club did you belong to?
7. Find someone who is very similar to you. What is his/her name? Explain in what ways you think you two are very similar.
8. Find someone who is very different from you. What is his/her name? Explain in what ways you think you two are very different.
9. Find someone who you think may potentially become your best friend forever. What is his/her name? Explain why you think so.
10. Find someone who __________ (make your own). What is his/her name? Explain your answer.

For instance, for Question 1, you need to find somebody who has been to New Zealand, and write down his/her name. Did you find somebody who has been to New Zealand? The answer is me! So you need to write down my name (Tatsuya Nakata) for this question.

In the same way, I’d like you to try to complete the above table, while reading self-introductions written by your classmates.

For Question 10, you can make your own statement. So it can be something like “Find someone who likes the same baseball team as you”, “Find someone who has the same academic advisor as you,” or “Find someone who likes the same movie as you” etc. Please be creative!

Hint: If you want to search for a particular keyword, please click on 検索 button and type in your keyword. For instance, if you are studying Spanish as the third language and want to look for someone who is also studying Spanish, type “Spanish” in the 検索 box and click on 実行 button.

If you cannot find someone for a particular statement after a while, you can skip the statement and move on to the next one. Just leave it blank. You don’t need to spend more than 5 minutes for each question. The purpose of this activity is to read other students’ introductions and get to know them, rather than filling all the blanks.

Now, are you clear on what we are going to do? If yes, please log into Blackboard and start reading about your amazing classmates whom you’re going to spend the next four years with!

When you finish, I’d like you to write down your answers to the above 10 questions on Blackboard. Please click on the link below when you’re ready:

Homework: Write about your intercultural experience

Homework for the next week is to write about any intercultural experience you had in the past year. It can be about your trips overseas, or meeting someone from other countries. Or you can also write about your intercultural experience you had in Japan. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that there are lots of different cultures even within Japan.

Please write at least 150 words. You can use a dictionary when writing. I’d like you to post your writing on 掲示板 on Blackboard again so we can share each other’s experience. Please click on the following link:
